Welcome To
Beginning Band!

Just about everyone in beginning band has never played a band instrument before. That doesn't matter, though, because with regular lessons in school, consistent practicing at home, and parental support, anyone can learn.

During their time in the District 112 bands, students will perform concerts, participate in festivals and go on a variety of field trips. All of these opportunities start by learning how to play an instrument in band during fifth grade. The research says that learning to play an instrument during elementary and middle school is one of the best things a student can do for social, emotional, and academic growth.

Parental participation in band includes renting a quality instrument (scholarships are available to qualifying families), bringing students to any concert that occurs outside of the regular school day, and supporting regular practice at home.

Students can choose from instruments listed below. Follow the links to learn about each instrument.

If you want to see all of the details before looking at instruments and registering, you can detour HERE first.

Flute

Flute is the highest sounding instrument. It is a member of the woodwind family. We want LOTS of flute players!

Clarinet

Clarinet is a woodwind instrument and has the largest range in the band. We need as many as we can get!

Alto Saxophone

Saxophone has a very unique compliment to the band. Too many will overwhelm our balance, so we only need a few.

Trumpet

Trumpet is the highest sound brass instrument and plays lots of melody. Trumpet players are fearless and we need plenty!

Trombone

Trombone is the foundation of the band. The more we have, the better. The slide is also super fun to play with!

Baritone/Euph.

Baritone is the foundation of the band. The more we have, the better. This is a good place for a future tuba player.

Percussion

Percussionists play lots of things, not just drums. Too many will overwhelm our balance, so we only need a few.

6th Grade

If you want to play oboe, bassoon, French Horn, or Tuba, let us know and we will find an appropriate starter instrument.

The chart below shows how many people are currently signed up to play each instrument and how many of each instrument we can have in order to sound our best. If there are too many people already playing an instrument, please consider that section closed.
